About the winery

The largest winery in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, with 17 ageing cellars and its own vineyards. Creator of Manzanilla Solear, the best-selling Manzanilla in the world.

Founded in 1821 by the Burgos-born merchants Benigno Barbadillo and Manuel López Barbadillo, it launched its first Manzanilla, Divina Pastora, in 1826. Today it maintains its Manzanilla Museum and 500 hectares of its own vineyards.

Designations of origin

DO Jerez-Xérès-Sherry · Manzanilla-Sanlúcar de Barrameda

View wineries →

The designation of origin for the fortified wines of the Marco: fino, manzanilla, amontillado, palo cortado, oloroso, Pedro Ximénez, moscatel and cream. It covers ageing under flor and the criaderas y soleras system, and only wineries registered with the Consejo Regulador may use it.

DO Vinagre de Jerez (Sherry Vinegar)

View wineries →

A designation of its own for vinegar aged in the same American oak butts and through the same solera system as Sherry wine. Many wineries hold it alongside the wine DO; a few produce vinegar exclusively.

PGI Vinos de la Tierra de Cádiz

View wineries →

A protected geographical indication covering still wines — reds, whites and rosés, neither fortified nor aged under flor — from sixteen municipalities of Cádiz province, inside and outside the Marco. Regulated by the Andalusian government since 2005, it is the umbrella for the region's grower reds and much of its new wave.

Bodegas Barrero

Since 1798

The house that has been picking up what Sanlúcar let fall. It starts in 1798 with the Marquis of Casa Arizón's San Pedro bodega; in 1986 José Luis Barrero bought the Miguel Sánchez Ayala firm outright, and in 2019 the two Pedro Romero buildings. That makes 8,300 square metres of bodega in the Barrio Bajo, a step from the beach, and it has recently opened to visitors.

Bodegas Alonso

The Asencio brothers set this house up so that what was left of three extinguished Sanlúcar bodegas would not be lost: Pedro Romero, Gaspar Florido and Fernando Méndez. They keep their very old amontillados, olorosos and palos cortados — the Ánsar Real butts are over a century old — and since 2017 have released a manzanilla of their own, Velo Flor, backed by thirteen hectares in Balbaína and Miraflores.
