Why does each winery have a colour of its own?

The cards carry no photographs, but an illustration drawn for this site: its palette evokes the landscape each house comes from. It is a note of colour, not a classification — the designation, the town and the size are all spelled out on the labels of every card.

  • Macharnudo albariza and gold
  • Carrascal toasted earth
  • Santiago clay and roof tile
  • Guadalquivir riverbank green
  • Guadalete river blue
  • Costa Atlantic turquoise
  • Marisma salt-marsh green
  • Campiña dryland ochre
  • Tinto garnet of the sierra

The albariza vineyards

The vineyards of the Sherry Region are organised into historic "pagos": plots of albariza soil with their own microclimates that shape the character of each wine.

Añina

A coastal pago with gentle albariza soils and great finesse, twinned with Balbaína in its calling for fine, delicate Fino wines.

Balbaína

Close to El Puerto de Santa María and highly exposed to the Atlantic westerlies, it produces light, elegant wines traditionally destined for Fino.

4 wineries with vineyards here

Carrascal

The furthest inland pago in the region, with less sea-breeze influence. Its slightly earlier ripening gives fuller-bodied wines, ideal for Oloroso.

Los Tercios

A historic pago near Macharnudo, with deep albariza soils highly prized for biological ageing.

Macharnudo

Considered the 'grand cru' of the Sherry Region. Located north of the city on pure, high-altitude albariza, it produces the finest grapes for long-aged Fino and Amontillado.

Chiclana de la Frontera

Bodegas F.J. Ruiz

Since 1972

Diego Ruiz Aragón set it up in 1972 almost as a hobby, with the wines of two Chiclana bodegas that were closing down. His son Fernando gave it commercial push from 1988, and today the house lives on its moscatels — El Dorado, El Viejo Dorado and a gran reserva — on the fino La Parra and the cream El Abuelo Fernando. It sells over the counter and shows the bodega with a tasting of Chiclana produce.

Sanlúcar de Barrameda

Bodegas Barrero

Since 1798

The house that has been picking up what Sanlúcar let fall. It starts in 1798 with the Marquis of Casa Arizón's San Pedro bodega; in 1986 José Luis Barrero bought the Miguel Sánchez Ayala firm outright, and in 2019 the two Pedro Romero buildings. That makes 8,300 square metres of bodega in the Barrio Bajo, a step from the beach, and it has recently opened to visitors.
