Bodega Alucinante

Save to my lists

About the winery

The wines of José Antonio Palacios, a winemaking technician who has made them in his own bodega in Sanlúcar since the summer of 2019: whites from Palomino and Moscatel, a sparkling wine by the ancestral method and an old fortified wine. He runs tastings for groups or to order.

He started in the late eighties with his friend David Mateos Cabezón, from León, and a wine called Albino; the first four hundred bottles came out at the start of this century. In 2016 they went separate ways and Palacios launched his first vintage under the Alucinante label. According to the house, its La Riparia del Abuelo won first prize in the 2023 Sanlúcar mosto competition.

Wines

Alucinante

A natural wine of the year, from Palomino and Moscatel, with fermentation stopped by chilling: fruity and fresh, with touches of pineapple.

La Riparia del Abuelo

Off-dry, from Palomino with a little Moscatel from Chipiona: pale yellow, smelling above all of apple.

Palotel

A medium-sweet white with a little sparkle, which finishes fermenting in the bottle by the ancestral method.

Bodegas Barrero

Since 1798

The house that has been picking up what Sanlúcar let fall. It starts in 1798 with the Marquis of Casa Arizón's San Pedro bodega; in 1986 José Luis Barrero bought the Miguel Sánchez Ayala firm outright, and in 2019 the two Pedro Romero buildings. That makes 8,300 square metres of bodega in the Barrio Bajo, a step from the beach, and it has recently opened to visitors.

Bodegas Alonso

The Asencio brothers set this house up so that what was left of three extinguished Sanlúcar bodegas would not be lost: Pedro Romero, Gaspar Florido and Fernando Méndez. They keep their very old amontillados, olorosos and palos cortados — the Ánsar Real butts are over a century old — and since 2017 have released a manzanilla of their own, Velo Flor, backed by thirteen hectares in Balbaína and Miraflores.

Bodegas del Río

Since 1990

The vineyard came before the bodega: in the 1920s Ángel del Río bought the Casilla Verde plot, and the house itself was not founded until 1990. For years it was an almacenista to the big firms; now, with seven hectares of its own in Miraflores — the coastal pago held to be manzanilla's grand cru — his sons have been bottling under their own label since 2022.
