Carrascal palette: toasted earthSixteen hectares of albariza in the heart of the Carrascal pago, planted with seven varieties and a winery that steps off the fortified path: reds from Tintilla de Rota, Malbec and Syrah, and an oak-aged Chardonnay.
The Cortijo de las Cortes, north of Jerez, was once a Williams & Humbert vineyard before all but a few hectares went over to wheat and sunflower. In 2014 it was bought by Noel and Regina Robyn — he American, she from León — who came to the Marco after living in Argentina and Italy and settled on the estate within ten days. They replanted the albariza with seven varieties, put up solar panels, and also work the estate’s olives, almonds and vegetable garden. The estate deliberately leaves the fortified tradition aside: it releases reds, rosés and a vintage white in runs of a few hundred bottles — the grapes are its own, the winemaking is done at cellars in Ronda and Jerez — and takes visitors through the vineyard by four-wheel drive with a paired tasting.
