Founded in 1830 in Chipiona by the Galician José Cabaleiro do Lago, it moved in 1932 to El Puerto de Santa María, where it absorbed the historic bodegas of José de la Cuesta (1849) and John William Burdon (1821). In the 1970s Ponche Caballero became one of the best-selling liqueurs in Spain and Europe. Since the 1990s the group has also included Bodegas Lustau. Its headquarters, the Castle of San Marcos, is a 13th-century fortress that also houses a museum.
